About us

Winterslow has a long and very admirable history in the world of local village cricket. Cricket dates back to the turn of the 20th Century in the village, indeed some of the current players had Grand parents and even Great Grand parents who played for the Club.

Until now, it was during the 1980's that the Club reached its pinnacle boasting and excellent record in The National Village Knockout reaching the last 16 in the Country in 1984.

Sadly, like many village Clubs, Winterslow began to struggle which lead to its demise in 2001 when the Club folded and merged with South Wilts. Unlike many other Clubs Winterslows demise was due to its success. At one point there were no fewer than seven village boys playing for South Wilts 1st XI in the Southern Premier League which clearly left a void of cricketers in the village.

Indeed in 2002 the village can boast having three cricketers in the Wiltshire County Team playing in the Minor County Championship. Current Club Captain Russell Rowe went on to make nearly 100 appearances for Wiltshire Captaining the side for some 4 years. Roger Sillence passed through Minor County Cricket signing professional terms with Gloucestershire in 2003, and then moving to Worcestershire in 2006. Chris Steedon was the third member who made some valuable contributions at Minor County level.

With such a strong and proud cricketing history it was surely inevitable cricket would eventually return to Winterslow, which it did in 2006. In 2006 the Club entered the Salisbury and District Wednesday Evening League having to play all games away from home. Then the money was found to relay the old square at the Recreation Ground to allow the Club to re-enter the Hampshire League structure in 2007.

Success immediately followed claiming a League Championship winning Regional North West 4 with an unblemished record of 14 straight victories.

One of the main reasons for the reforming of the Club was the promise of a brand new state of the art facility. For which we have not been let down. Thanks to many many people we are now playing our cricket at Barry's Field Winterslow, which has a purpose built cricket facility good enough to match many senior clubs in the area.

We moved to Barry's Field at the start of the 2008 season after being moved up an unprecedented three leagues to Regional North 1, although decimated by rain the 2008 season was also incredibly successful. The team gained a second successive promotion, moving them up to the County League structure for 2009. With the loss of several influential players 2009 was a tough one for the first eleven but a creditable mid table finish was the best that could be expected.

A Second XI was formed for the 2009 season and the had a very successful year finishing third in the North West Division 4 of the Hampshire League, providing vital experience for many of our younger cricketers.

The juniors competed in the New Forest Cricket League at both under 11 and 13 level and now has some 70 members.

The icing on the cake was a wonderfully successful day when the club hosted the world famous Lashings World XI, Jason Gillespie, Gordon Greenidge, Devon Malcolm playing against Winterslow…. What a fantastic day.
