Lashings 2009
Apart from the dreadful weather conditions dealt to us, the 2009 Lashings day was an unrivalled success, as a spectacle it was perhaps as good as a sporting event held in our area for many years, as a fund raising exercise it was also successful and it has allowed the club to purchase a new bowling machine, a mobile net and contribute towards the District and County coaching of some of our very talented Junior members. most importantly however, from the feedback we have received it was a very enjoyable day for all those who attended, and I can assure you it was the same for the players involved.
A combination of a positive feedback, a Lashings request and also a determination to beat the British weather has lead us to book the Lashings for the Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend in 2010. This event promises to be more enjoyable and even bigger than last year’s efforts as we have learnt the best way forward. Winterslow Cricket Club are delighted to announce that they have again secured the booking of the world famous Lashings Cricket Club for a cricket fixture on the 29thAugust 2010 Following the great success of the 2009 fixture Winterslow CC have decided to hold another Lashing World XI event and this time lets hope for some sunshine!!! The 2009 match was a fantastic day for the club, supporters and sponsors alike, even thought mother nature did its very best to dampen the day, it has to be deemed as a success allowing the club to make the above mentioned purchases. Some 300 guests enjoyed the fabulous lunch event hosted by the quite brilliant Lashings MC’s, the world famous Lashings players and of course the wonderfully eloquent Henry Blofeld MBE. There were some 350 other hardy spectators who braved the quite awful conditions to watch what proved to be a good game of 20/0 cricket, with Australia’s Ian Harvey starring with the bat and some crowd pleasing quick bowling from England’s Devon Malcolm and Australia’s Jason Gillespie. Lashings won the game by 40 runs but to see International players of such stature at Winterslow CC was a truly amazing spectacle. For those who don’t know the Lashings World XI are an all star cricket team, like a cricketing equivalent of basketballs “Harlem Globetrotters”. Some of the players in the past include the greats of our game, Muttiah Muralitharan, Brian Lara, Shoaib Akhtar and Sir Viv Richards, amonst many others. They travel all other the world playing in fixtures either raising money for some excellent charities or indeed giving the local cricket clubs like ours an opportunity to raise funds for the grass roots level of the game. On average around over 1000 will attend an event of this nature (weather permitting) as the Lashings World XI side will include some world class cricketers who are also household names. The team we faced in 2009 fixtures was – Ian Harvey, Jason Gillespie and Stuart Law (Australia) Gordon Greenidge, Ritchie Richardson (West Indies) Mohammed Akram, Saqulain Mustaq, (Pakistan), Chris Harris (New Zealand) Devon Malcolm, Phil Defraitas, Ed Giddins, (England). They provide excellent entertainment on the day, and again we will be inviting all forms of local media to raise the profile of the day, and fully expect a fantastic turn out.
